The Grand Canyon is a mile deep, 277 miles long and 18
miles wide. It has an elevation spanning from around
2,000 feet to over 8,000 feet, allowing it to experience
a variety of weather conditions. As a result, the tem-
perature generally increases by 5.5 degrees with each
1,000-feet loss in elevation.
When it opened in 1903 , the Williamsburg Bridge sup-
ported the heaviest load of any bridge in the world.
It provided two elevated railway tracks, four streetcar
tracks, two lanes of road in each direction, and foot and
bicycle paths above the trolley tracks.
